Becoming a member of your child’s PTA is one of the best ways to become involved with their education and show them how much you care. The membership dues are $6.00 each, which also includes a school directory, along with your membership. This is the only way you will be able to receive a directory. I encourage you to become involved in their child’s school through volunteering. Herfurth has many ways from which to choose to volunteer. The range from reading in classrooms, cutting out projects, decorating/etc. for teachers, helping out at school and PTA events such as class parties, field day, carnival, fundraising pick-up, food donations for teachers hospitality meals, serving as a committee member on the PTA Board and many, many more. In fact, many volunteer opportunities can be completed at home! Your Herfurth PTA uses the funds raised during our Fall Fundraising drive to improve the elementary school experience. The PTA provides $5 toward a field trip for every student, field day ribbons and treats, class parties, health & safety awareness – such as red ribbon week, and so much more. Hospitality Committee would like to send a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make our holiday luncheon for the teachers a huge success! It would not be possible without everyone's help! Our next luncheon is scheduled for March 13th. Please watch for details and if you would like to help you can contact Donnell Balcom at ddfishes@aol.com. Thanks again! President’s PenI can’t believe we are half way through the school year. There are exciting things going on at Herfurth. Thanks to all the parents and students who have participated in the various fundraisers, and a special thanks to Lowe’s Home Improvement for a $5,000 grant. We have purchased over $26,000 of playground equipment for both the kindergarten and main playgrounds. A special thanks to the playground committee, Dana Lynch, Donnell Balcolm and Crystal Chavez-Sanders, for all the hard work and time they put into working with GISD and the playground equipment vendor. Picking out the equipment, negotiating with the vendor and getting the installation scheduled quickly required a lot of these three ladies time. If you see them, please take a minute to extend a Hearty “Thank you” to them. In addition to the playground improvements, the PTA has been busy scheduling programs. December’s assembly was all about exotic animals, January’s program taught the students about dental hygiene and the students were provide free toothbrushes. February we look forward to Red E. Fox teaching what to do in the case of an emergency and in March there will be a program on farm animal education with live animals! Your fundraising dollars are providing support to the teachers for classroom supplies and playground equipment and each grade level receives funds for a field trip. If you are like me, you probably don’t like to do fundraisers. But as the spring fundraiser is upon us, please keep in mind all the great things your fundraising dollars are doing for the school. It takes all of us to make the fundraiser a success. And a successful fundraiser means more improvements to Herfurth! I’m looking forward to the second half of the school year! Tanis Darnell |
