Stephens Library
READ and GROW

Sandy Holmberg
Librarian

The Stephens Elementary Library provides a collection of over 11,000 well-selected books and materials for teachers and students. Our mission is to support the curriculum, educate, inform, and inspire our students and faculty. The library is fully automated and features four multipurpose workstations that may be used for catalog searches, Internet access, or other research. Our motto is “Read and Grow” because reading facilitates intellectual, social, and emotional growth.

The library is staffed by Sandy Holmberg and Kaprice Kienitz, certified librarians, and Paula Youngkin, Assistant. Hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on school days. We provide many services for students, parents and teachers, including checking out books and materials, STAR testing, Accelerated Reader, storytelling, teaching lessons in the use of libraries, introducing the research process and literature appreciation.

Each student in K through 5 visits the library at least once a week with their class:

Kindergarten visits once a week for a 15 minute storytime. They do not check out books.
First, second and third graders visit once a week and may check out one book at a time.
Fourth and fifth graders visit once a week and may check out two books at a time.

Library books are checked out for 7 days. They may be returned early or be renewed if the book is not in demand. There are no overdue charges for library books. However, students are not allowed to check out additional books if they have an overdue book. Students are notified when they have an overdue book.

If a book is lost or damaged, students will be asked to pay for the replacement cost of the book. Students should carry their books to and from school in a bag or backpack, preferably waterproof.

Open AR Checkout time is offered twice daily from 11:00 to 11:30 and 2:00 to 2:30. Students who need a new AR book may check out at this time.

Materials available in the library for teacher use include:

    Class set of microscopes
    Overhead calculators
    Educational/curriculum-based videos
    Extensive Professional Section
    Professional magazines and journals
    AV equipment

Our library also offers updated reference materials, a large collection of fiction and nonfiction books (in English and Spanish), magazines, AR Family Reading Nights and the AR Store. We sponsor the Bluebonnet Reading Program, the Read to Succeed Program and the Science Fair.
