LIGHT Counselor
The LIGHT Program was initiated as a direct result of the goal of the Board of Trustees to fight drug and alcohol abuse in our schools. The acronym "LIGHT" stands for "Living Intervention and Guidance for Healthier Teens." Symbolically, it is an appropriate name for the program. Just as a candle will provide light in the darkness, LIGHT provides it's own kind of illumination in the times of personal need. The program operates under the umbrella of the Office of Guidance and Counseling. LIGHT Counselors, known as Student Services Specialists, work with students, parents and staff members at all GISD schools. The program's emphasis is on strengthening the educational process through the following methods:
- Prevention
- Identification
- Referral
- Intervention

Red Ribbon Week
In cooperation with the Texan's War on Drugs, the LIGHT program promotes a Red Ribbon Week. Much like wearing colored ribbons to signify support for a given cause, wearing a red ribbon signifies support of a drug-free lifestyle. The LIGHT program provides ribbons to students and staff to wear, and individual campuses plan special activities to promote the week. Read more about Red Ribbon Week.
