Dress & Grooming Code

At Rowlett High School, we believe we are preparing our students to be successful in their future endeavors. We have established a dress code so as students enter the business world through the work program, internships, or after they graduate, they will have had the preparation for appropriate dress and grooming. Students must be in compliance with the dress and grooming code the instant they enter the building.

These specific changes are in effect for the 2005-2006 school year.

Girls:

  1. Skirts will be no higher than right above the knee.
  2. Tops must be at least below the belt loops. If not, the shirts must be layered so that this length is met.
  3. Tops may not be low cut and no cleavage can be displayed.
  4. No off the shoulder tops regardless of layering.
  5. No see through or lingerie tops/outfits

Boys:

  1. Must wear belts, and shirts (including jerseys) must be tucked into pants. Belts must be visible, not covered by partially untucked shirts. Sweaters/sweatshirts do not need to be tucked in but no oversized clothing will be permitted.
  2. No Tall T’s.
  3. No sagging - must meet the back pocket rule. Back pockets must be on the buttocks.

What will continue:

  1. No earrings or other piercing (tongues, etc.) for boys - District rule.
  2. No piercing other than earrings for girls.
  3. No torn or ripped clothing.
  4. No caps, skull caps, do-rags, bandanas, headbands or head coverings permitted in the building. No sunglasses.
  5. No facial hair, sideburns below the ear, or hairstyles such as
    • mohawks
    • spikes
    • half-shaved scalps
    • lettering/inappropriate designs shaved on scalps
    • other extreme styles that, in the opinion of the administrator, are not appropriate for school
  6. No visible tattoos.
  7. No hair coloring where the result is not a natural human hair color. Maroon is not allowed.
  8. No shirts with double meanings or anything that has any message that advertise, represent, suggest, or depict the following:
    • alcohol
    • tobacco
    • drugs
    • nudity
    • death
    • blood/gore/skulls
    • racism
    • satanic themes
    • violence
    • gangs
    • sexual language/innuendo
    • obscene language
    • inappropriate words/graphics
  9. No nighttime/bedtime attire - no pajama tops or bottoms, no robes, no house shoes, no pillows, or blankets.
  10. No beach attire, bare-backed attire, midriff tops, or strapless dresses, tube tops, muscle shirts, tank tops, dresses/tops with spaghetti straps or thin straps (even with a shirt/jacket over these tops), or cut out tops.
  11. No clothing that has been marked with pens or markers.
  12. No tight stirrup pants, spandex pants, or aerobic workout clothing.
  13. No large objects around the neck, ropes or cords as necklaces, spiked bracelets, chains that hang visibly outside the clothing, or any accessories, in general, that can be used as a weapon.
  14. RHS Field Trips - Students wanting to go on RHS Field Trips must wear - Sunday Dress - type clothes - no jeans.
  15. Required dress code for all dances (Homecoming, Regency, Prom).

Students MAY wear shorts at RHS (we are the only GISD high school that allows this), but they must adhere to RHS requirements. Shorts must be right above the knee and NO higher. Types of shorts not allowed include:

  • biker shorts
  • short shorts
  • boxer shorts
  • cut-offs, or any shorts with a cut-off look
  • lightweight athletic shorts
  • wind shorts
  • lace shorts

The final decision in determining appropriate dress and appearance shall rest with the principal or assistant principals. Failure to adhere to established dress and appearance codes will result in immediate placement in RAC.

Students can be referred at any time during the day if the student is observed to be in violation of the dress and grooming code policy and was not referred upon entering. The student will be sent to RAC for the remainder of the day. This consequence will only be allowed twice. After being assigned RAC the second time, the student may be sent to RAC for that day and suspended the next day.

Being sent to RAC twice for any referral will result in students losing their exemptions for the trimester.

Dress Code and Behavior Expectations for Dances
Homecoming, Regency, and Prom

Based on past experiences at dances, the administrators of RHS felt it would be a good idea to reinforce our expectations for appropriate dress and behavior at school dances.

There are dance clubs out in the community designed for teen dancing, or certainly students can organize their own dance parties, where the school doesn't have, and certainly does not want to have any jurisdiction. What styles of dress and behavior occur there will partially be determined by an informed parent’s decision to allow their student to attend or not. But for a school dance, where we have the authority and the responsibility to maintain standards that we feel are consistent with our district and our community, we will impose and enforce the following expectations.

Dress Code for Dances

If the attire is questionable, students are encouraged to show their evening wear to the administrators beforehand to determine if it is appropriate for the dance.

Girls
Girls will wear semi-formal, formal gowns, or outfits with pants. Strapless and spaghetti strap will be permitted.

The following will not be permitted:
No extremely low cut dresses (front or back)
No two piece formal gowns or pants and top, where the midriff is showing
No see through gowns

Boys
Boys are encouraged to wear a suit or sports coat, but at a minimum they are expected to wear semi-formal wear, such as slacks, nice shoes, and a nice shirt (ties are encouraged, but not required).

The following will not be permitted:
No shorts
No jeans
No tennis shoes
No torn clothing

Again, if the attire is questionable, students are encouraged to show their evening wear to the administrators beforehand to determine if it is appropriate for the dance.

Consequences:
Students will not be permitted into the dance or will be escorted out of the dance. No money will be refunded.

If an RHS student’s date is not an RHS student (from another school) it is the responsibility of the RHS student to inform his or her date that the required dress and behavior codes will apply to the date as well.

Suggestive Dancing and Public Displays of Affection

Styles of dancing that the administrators determine to be inappropriate for a school dance setting will not be permitted. The style of dancing referred to includes dancing in a manner that strongly suggests sexual activity.

Public displays of affection will not be acceptable. The behavior referred to includes long, passionate kissing or other displays of intimacy inappropriate for a school dance setting.

As parents, we know that you entrust us to provide the best environment for your student not only during the day but at evening activities as well. Monitoring such areas as dance, public display of affection, and attire will allow us to accomplish this endeavor. We will notify you by phone if your student is not being admitted to the dance because of attire or being asked to leave because of inappropriate dancing or conduct.

Again, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the administration immediately so we can address your concerns.
