Kindergarten – 1 book (beginning 4th six weeks)
1st-4th grade – 2 books
5th grade – 3 books

Students check out during their weekly library class. Books are due the following week. If a student would like to continue reading a book, he may recheck it. Students are also welcome to return books at any time to get another book.

Overdue Books


Watson does not charge fines for overdue books, but students may not check out until their books are returned. Students must pay for damaged or torn books. Overdue slips will be sent home.

Reading Incentive Programs

Braum’s Book Buddy program is a fun and rewarding reading incentive program for children in 1st through 5th grades. It offers children the opportunity to read for delicious prizes from Braums. Students earn a free ice cream coupon for every six A.R. tests passed. Coupons will be handed out every six-weeks. Braums promotes a positive attitude in children for a lifetime love of reading.

Six Flags Six Hour Reading Club encourages students in grades K through 6 to complete six hours of recreational reading and rewards them with free admission tickets to participating Six Flags theme parks. Forms will be sent home in late December and will be due in February.

Texas Bluebonnet Award Reading List

These 20 nominees are highly recommended by Texas Librarians. Grades 3-5 will read will read at least 5 in the library and will be eligible to vote for a state winner in January. See the attached list or visit the web site for details.

Accelerated Reader


Students in grades 1-5 have a chance to read, gage comprehension and earn prizes in Watson’s AR reading program. Students read specially marked books on their appropriate level. After reading the book, they may take a short computerized AR test in the classroom or library. The results allow the teacher and student to measure comprehension. Students also earn points to use in the AR Store. A complete AR list is located in all Garland libraries and the Rowlett library.
