Harrold's Forest

A letter from Mrs. Gharis: While studying the letter H we read about the koalas. We learned that their habitat has been greatly reduced due to cutting down the trees for human use of the land. The towns and cities are expanding into the areas of the koalas. The result is that many koalas die from being hit by cars or killed by dogs. Their food supply has been reduced as people cut their trees. In looking on the internet to find out about koalas we discovered an organization called The Koala Foundation (https://www.savethekoala.com), which has a slogan "No tree, no me" and which invites people to plant a tree on line. We learned about Harrold's forest, Harrold being a statue that represents the koalas. For each $10.00 donation, the foundation will plant a tree. During the month of April the children in my class brought money, from a few cents on up. We collected a total of $60.00, which we submitted on line, and which the foundation will use to plant 6 trees for the koalas. We are now listed on page 2 of their Honour Board (https://www.savethekoala.com/harroldboard.html) in their green leaf program for individuals or groups that have made donations for 5-19 trees. The children enjoyed doing something to help these precious animals.

Teacher of the Year

Rosalyn Berger was named Heather Glen Teacher of the Year! Congratulations Mrs. Berger, we are very proud of your accomplishments this year!!!
Rosalyn Berger graduated from the University of North Texas in 2003, and last May she finished her Master's degree in Christian Education from Dallas Theological Seminary. In 2006 she found her passion in the classroom, teaching the fourth-graders of Heather Glen. She also loves theater, and the Drama Club she started this year provided an exciting new challenge, and fun opportunity for our fourth and fifth-graders. She and her husband, Tony, have a shaggy black dog named Regan.

Nurse Jackie's Journal
Memorial Day Helpul Hints for the weekend and the rest of your summer vacation!!!
- No shots, No school, no exceptions. If your student is in need of immunizations, they must be completed before the first day of school or the student will not be allowed to attend and the absence will not be excused. No exceptions.
- If your child has a medical condition that the nurse needs to know about or medications that need to be given during the school day, please call or come in to the clinic to see the nurse before the first day of school. As the first day of class is very hectic, this will save you a great deal of time.
- If your child has a food allergy. Please provide the school with a note from the doctor. This alerts the cafeteria staff at every meal to check the student's tray for foods that may cause an allergic reaction. Your child's welfare is our greatest concern!
- School year routines such as getting ready for bed on time and getting up/ ready on time take a while to establish. Starting a back to school routine a couple of weeks before school starts will help ensure a lower stress level for both you and your student.
- Please review the breakfast and lunch menus for the school. This allows you to plan alternative meals if your child does not like what is served in the cafeteria.
- Please send a back up set of clothing in the backpack for KN at least for the first month. Many times kids who are potty trained will have accidents while learning to adjust to the school routine.
- Please feel free to come in or call the clinic with any information or concerns.
The New Drama Club is Ready for the Show!

The Heather Glen Drama Club combines the many talents of our 4th and 5th graders from drawing and sewing to acting and directing. This new club meets every Wednesday and is working on two productions for this school year.
The Miracle of the Expanding Table which showcased drama club members working with the fifth grade music students was a huge success. The next club performance, The Elves and the Shoemaker will be in the Spring. Be sure to check out the Media Gallery to see pictures from our dress rehearsal. One of the club members is shown here with a painting he did as a set prop.
