Support ALE to Morgan's Wonderland
We are asking for help to raise money to fund a trip to Morgans Wonderland for 15 amazing, strong, and unique children who were given the gift of being different in our world. These children are all students in the ALE class at Shugart Elementary in Garland, Texas. ALE stands for "Alternate Learning Environment". Our students all require special modifications in order to be successful in their educational and personal lives. Our students' disabilIties range from Intellectual Disabililties, Down Syndrome, and Autism. Click here to donate.
Get Ready for Dr. Seuss Day!
We will be celebrating National Read Across America Day by dressing up like the lovable characters from the many Dr. Seuss books. We will also be enjoying a delicious Green Eggs and Ham breakfast in our cafeteria. The festive activities will take place on March 2.
Every Day is College Day
How do we remind our students of the importance of college? Our teachers and administrators proudly display their college profiles. Also, each Tuesday morning, during announcements, students read a staff member's college profile. The profile mentions a university, degrees earned, and reasons for attending college. The last part includes a sentence in which staff members give advice to students who want to go to college. Check out the college profile for second grade teacher, Angela Morrow.
Abiola Joda is Going to UTD
Fifth grader, Abiola Joda knows exactly what it takes to start preparing for college. He is our top AR Reader and has currently read nearly two million words. You can see why he competed in and won our school's Spelling Bee. Abiola went on to represent Shugart in the district Spelling Bee where he was selected as a finalist. On February 18, Abiola will be advancing to the county level of the Spelling Bee. The competition will be held at the University of Texas at Dallas. We wish him well as he awaits his chance to go even further in the competition. We know he will do a fantastic job. We are so proud of him.
It's Never too Early to Start Reading
Thanks to a few Donors Choose contributors and the GISD Education Foundation, our prekindergarten students have these fun, new Radio Flyer wagons to hold their boardbooks. This allows them to start learning library independence
Books Support College Readiness
We are always looking for ways to keep our students thinking about college. One way to achieve this goal is to provide students with books that have subject matter about college. In Judy Moody Goes to College, a little girl is struggling with math concepts. She is disappointed when she learns that her parents are hiring a tutor, but she's pleasantly surprised when her sessions are held on a college campus. You can find this book in the school or public library.
