AVID Makes a Difference
At the end of the 2011-2012 school year, O’Banion was validated as an AVID National Demonstration School for a term of three years! This is a huge honor and tells the world that O’Banion Middle School has a college-going culture and that all students (not just AVID students) receive some of the best instruction going on anywhere.
On Tuesday, December 10, O’Banion hosted an AVID Open House which gave our campus the chance to showcase our nationally renowned AVID program to teachers, superintendents and AVID staff from across the nation. Our visitors experienced O’Banion’s best practices in teaching and learning through classroom visits in all three grade levels in all departments. One particular highlight was a carousel gallery where AVID students showcased and presented their AVID Passion Projects. Garland AVID Director, Mrs. Janice Howard remarked, “The AVID students articulated their research so well, and they all were so interesting! It was an excellent learning experience to see the students excited about learning and sharing!” With deliberate and purposeful AVID implementation across all grade levels to ALL students, AVID at O’Banion is truly making a difference in the lives of all our students.
Garland ISD is taking action to save energy with a new policy. During extended breaks from school, all electrical appliances must be turned off and/or unplugged in every building within the district. Additionally, the heating and air conditioning set points in all district buildings have been adjusted. The new policy will not only save money, but it will save energy as well.
Many opportunities are available for each one of us to join in this conservation effort. Recycling materials at home has never been easier. The City of Garland's Environmental Waste Services is implementing single stream recycling. This presents a wonderful opportunity for each one of us to take action in reducing our carbon footprint.
O'Banion Students Step Up
The annual canned food drive was a huge success. Organized by the Student Council, we collected over one thousand cans. We also accepted monetary donations, which totaled $600.
The Student Council also joined efforts with the National Junior Honors Society to make blankets and Christmas cards for a local senior center. They delivered over fifty hand-made blankets to the seniors. The residents were quite touched, as were our students. In fact, there was not a dry eye in the house! It was truly a remarkable lesson in humanity for all.
