J. W. O'Banion Middle School
An AVID National Demonstration School
Mr. Tucci gives a brief calendar update twice a month. He highlights the events and happenings around our campus.
Creativity Pays Off
Courtney Reed, the theater arts teacher at O'Banion, has done it again! For the second year in a row, Reed was a finalist in the Kidd Kraddick Classroom Musical contest.
"Last year we were finalists; this year we won," said Reed. "My students worked hard putting this video together, but we had a lot of fun."
The group's creativity has paid off in more ways than one. As first place winners, they have received a price of $1500 which will be spent on stage lighting and costumes. Additionally, the school will host the group Karmin for a live concert in the school gym!
"I am very proud of Mrs. Reed and her students," said O'Banion's principal Mr. Tucci. "They saw the challenge and faced it head-on. And now, because of their creativity and focus, our whole school will get to enjoy a concert in May."

The Art Program at O'Banion has been successful year after year. Art classes are available for all three grade levels throughout the day. Additionally, Art I for high school credit is offered to 8th grade students before and after school. Sample some of our student creativity by visiting our media gallery.
Spring Soccer is Here
Bison soccer has been an intramural sport for the past ten years. Seven years ago, we began playing soccer against teams from other campuses. The game schedule has expanded over the years to include almost all middle schools.
This year soccer is finally becoming a Garland ISD sanctioned sport for 7th and 8th graders, just like basketball, football and track. Tryouts were held on April 7 and 8, and now the teams are getting ready for the spring season. The first game will be held on April 15.
AVID Makes a Difference
At the end of the 2011-2012 school year, O’Banion was validated as an AVID National Demonstration School for a term of three years! This is a huge honor and tells the world that O’Banion Middle School has a college-going culture and that all students (not just AVID students) receive some of the best instruction going on anywhere.
On Tuesday, April 15, the CEO of AVID came to visit O'Banion. We were quite honored to have someone of such high stature visit our school. O'Banion was one of only two schools in the area that Dr. Husk visited. Dr. Husk visited four of our classrooms and spoke with the students. The students demonstrated excellence as they showed Dr. Husk their work samples.
