We Love Southgate
Southgate students work hard and they love to learn. Such learning is depicted in this video clip. Teachers find innovative and creative ways of making learning fun! One such example is the planting of growing of plants and vegetables in Mrs. Hill's class. Students take care of the plants and then sell them to our Southgate family. The teachers here at Southgate love to teach and truly make a difference in the learning of the students.
National Library Week
April 14-18 is National Library Week. This is a time when all libraries and what they provide to their communities are celebrated. So visit your library and check out a great read!
Read to Succeed
Read to Succeed is a reading program sponsored by the Six Flags Corporation which the library promotes. Students participated voluntarily and were required to complete outside reading for a total of 360 minutes or six hours. In return Six Flags will send them a ticket to one of their theme parks. The program ended in March but restarts in the fall.
Technology in Classroom
Southgate students utilize iPads for class projects. Students are excited and engaged in learning using the new iPads for their classroom projects and research.
Southgate offers Saturday School for students so that they may get extra tutoring and instruction in areas or subjects that will benefit them in the classroom as well as for testing. Southgate also offers ESL Saturday school in the computer lab for parents of students wishing to improve their English language skills.
Students receive extra help and instruction daily in each classroom addressing specific skills and subject matter to better serve their individual needs.
Several sudent groups help with car traffic before school and also help in the cafeteria at breakfast and lunch. Also, our fourth grade students have partnered with PPCD to help raise funds for a special field trip for Mr. P’s students. It is refreshing to see these young students help our younger students fulfill their dream!
A Birthday for Dr. Seuss
Our librarian, Miss Dodson, and classes have had fun learning about Dr. Seuss and celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday the last few weeks. Students enjoyed two special speakers and readers, Javier Solis, GISD Hispanic Liason, and Chris Moore, Executive Director of Communications for this special event.

Spring will soon be here bringing warmer weather, much needed rainfall and new life in the form of plants and flowers. Southgate Gator Aides have been preparing for their 2nd annual plant sale. We've planted a variety of flowers, vegetables as well as beautiful decorative green plants
Mr. P's Class is Ready to Go!
Morgan's Wonderland: Mr. Plomantes' class has been saving to take a field trip to Morgan's Wonderland an amusement park in San Antonio designed specifically for children with special needs. Due to the gift of a generous donation presented to Mr. Plomantes and his class by the Garland Police Association, fund raising efforts went over the top. Mr. P, his students, staff, and parents will be leaving May 8 and return to Southgate May 9. Way to go!
GISD's Parent Newsletter are now available online. They are both offered in English and Spanish.
