Math, Science & Technology
(MST) Magnet Program
What Makes This School Different
Watson is a school with the "real world" in mind. Students work together in teams to reach common goals by dividing big projects into smaller tasks shared by individual team members. Students use interdisciplinary skills to solve problems. The curriculum is aligned to allow for the integration of other subject areas--through math, science and technology themes. Emphasis is placed on cooperative learning.
Each classroom is equipped with a Smartboard and multi-media presentation station that includes a teacher computer, projector, VCR, printer, scanner and document camera. Grade levels are also equipped with IPODS, ITouches, Macbooks and IPADS. Teachers frequently use the multimedia stations to incorporate the Internet into their lessons. Students present their class projects using all the technology available to them. Students in each classroom are seated at tables in teams of four where they complete daily projects and assignments.
Each student in grades 2-5 has two core teachers daily. One teaches English language arts and social studies classes, and the other provides the math and science curriculum.
Wii Love Gym
Wii are very excited to have implemented a Wii into the PE program. Studies have shown that playing a Wii can enhance a student's hand eye coordination. The students are using the Wii in a station setting and are loving it!
Do you enjoy listening to books as well as reading them? If so, you will love what we have added to the Watson library. We are very excited to introduce Playaways. Watson's library is providing an integrated literary experience for 3rd - 4th grade students with Playaway units. Used with Watson's library books, the Playaway offers audio text to enhance students' personal reading at home. We believe this program will be a valuable experience for your child. Prior to allowing the Playaways to be checked out, it will be necessary for you to sign the Playaway agreement, assuring us that you are aware of the responsibilities regarding its care.
Watson is equipped with a full size greenhouse and an outside garden area with beds for seasonal planting. Students in all grades use the garden/greenhouse area to enhance their curriculum.
STARLAB Portable Planetarium
The STARLAB system is a portable teaching environment that can be brought right into the classroom. It consists of an inflatable dome that seats 35-45 students, a projector and projection cylinders that cover a range of topics from stars and constellations to native american legends. Students and parents a like love the special activities in the STARLAB.
Fifth grade students build models and robots using a programmable LEGO brick as the brain of their models/ robots. After being programmed with ROBOLAB, the robots take action in their environment by interacting and making decisions based on the inputs that are around them. Two RCXs can even communicate with each other! The robots are fully autonomous, acting on their own with no support from the computer. If the behavior of the robot does not match the desired behavior, then they can be easily reprogrammed using the ROBOLAB software.
Camp Sky Ranch
Fifth graders at Watson are offered a unique, hands-on learning experience at Camp Sky Ranch. Students are provided the opportunity to learn outside the classroom in a new environment under the guidance of the outstanding faculty. Students learn by seeing, touching and discovering the world around them through our innovative courses. And thanks to the highly-trained faculty, the teachers and parent chaperones can participate and learn along with their students.
