Kindergarten News
Welcome to the Hickman website! Whether this is your first visit, or
you visit often, we hope that you will continue to be a part of our
monthly Kindergarten updates.
First, we would like to thank all
those who attended Meet the Teacher Night. What a pleasure it was to
see how many enthusiastic and involved parents we have here at Hickman.
Next, we’d like to let you know about a few things we have going on in
Kindergarten. This week, we are learning all about our school community
and our local community. We are eagerly awaiting a visit from Officer
McCay. He is visiting to help us understand more about his role as a
Community Helper. It is our goal to build a respect and understanding
of how each person in our neighborhood performs an important role in the
functioning of our community.
In addition to community helpers, we
are covering a number of basic math concepts; such as shapes, sorting,
counting, and locations (positions) of objects as they relate to each
other. When we arrive at our unit of “Positions,” we will build
location vocabulary; such as between, over, under, beside, etc… We will
build upon these concepts throughout the year, particularly the
counting. By Christmas, we will be counting to 100. Parents, please
take the time to practice these concepts at home.
Last, we would like
to introduce you to the foundational reading skills that we will be
covering during the first few weeks of school. The first three weeks of
school are spent reviewing the letters of the alphabet, both lowercase
and uppercase. On the fourth week, we will begin working on the letter
Mm sound and in the fifth week, we will cover both the short sound and
the long sound of the letter Aa. Throughout the year, we will cover
each sound of the alphabet and learn to read words with that sound;
however, we do not go in ABC order. Please be sure to look at your
child’s folder to keep up to date on the letter sound of that week. It
will benefit your child greatly if you can practice blending the sound
in small words so that your child will begin to read. Your child needs
sufficient practice both at school and at home. You can visit
www.starfall.com, which has many exercises for beginning readers.
Thank
you again for taking the time to visit us here in Kindergarten. We
hope that you will be back again to see what progress our kinder kids
are making throughout our school year. We strongly encourage parents
and caretakers to visit a local library and help your child build a
lifelong love of reading. If you have any questions, please let us
know. We are so glad that you are a part of our Hickman Family.
Thank
you again,
The Hickman Kindergarten Team
