First Grade News

Wow!  We are already well into our third week of the first six weeks and we are really off to a fantastic start.  Our first graders have been very busy learning about school and our school helpers.  We have also been very busy learning all about our new classmates.

In reading, we have been working on blending sounds together to make words.  For example, if I say c-a-t I know the word is cat.  Try saying some sounds to your child and see if they can blend the sounds together to make words.  We have also spent a lot of time reviewing our letters and sounds.  Your child can visit www.starfall.com to build his/her reading skills.  If your child needs to review letters and sounds, simply click on the ABC link at the top of the page.  If your child already knows his/her letters then your child can visit the other links on the page or even visit www.speakaboos.com  for extra reading practice.

In math, we have been busy working on counting and making numbers to 12.  Try having your child use beans or cereal pieces to count groups of numbers.  Your child can also order these numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least.

In science, we have been having lots of fun learning all about patterns.  Your child has learned that a pattern has a part that repeats.  For example, I could make a pattern by repeating colors, shapes, sizes, and even physical movements.  You can have your child practice patterns by doing a movement like clap, clap, stomp and then you repeat the movements back to them.  Then you can do a pattern and have your child do it back to you.  Your child can also point out patterns that they see all around them.

This week your child will be taking home an extra sheet in his/her Take Home Folder.  This is a Homework Log sheet that lists the homework assignments for each day.  Please be sure to have your child do the activities for the day of the week and then sign your initials in the box to show that your child completed the activities.  We are hoping to have all first graders be able to participate in our Homework Celebration at the end of the month.  Any child who completed his/her homework for the month of September will be eligible to participate in this awesome celebration.

Thank you so much for all of your help and support during these last two weeks of school.  We are off to a fantastic start and know that we will continue to see great things from our first graders. ÿ
