Counseling

Throughout the year, Mrs. Newman will continue to meet with all students in each classroom, in small groups and lunch groups. She'll be introducing many character traits that all Groovy Gators will want to have!

What Can Mrs. Newman Do For Me?

Counselors will help you by:

  • reviewing your choice of subject during the registration period (February - April)
  • providing study skills and academic information
  • providing career and college information
  • helping in teacher/student relationships
  • helping cope with family issues
  • listening to concerns about friends, etc.
  • giving you information about life and decision-making skills
  • referring you to people or places outside of school for help if necessary
  • being your advocate – counselors are here for you!

Counselors for each campus are certified by the state of Texas in School Counseling, have a Master’s Degree, and previous teaching experience. Each elementary school has a guidance counselor to help ensure that adequate support for helping students to succeed and meet their goals is available.

Cybersafety Lessons and Activities for GISD Students

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. Although the start end dates can vary slightly depending on the organization and source, Red Ribbon Week generally takes place the last full week in October, with the weekends before and following the last full week included as appropriate celebration dates.

Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America.

And, perhaps more importantly, Red Ribbon Week commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffikers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe.

Bullying and Cybersafety

No student should be subjected to bullying or harassment that interferes with their ability to learn or their safety.

Visit the district website for more information and resources related to bullying and cybersafety.
