Colonel Organizations

ART CLUB

Art Club membership is available to those students who take an interest in the different types of art and wish to develop their own artistic abilities.  The Art Club provides students with a means of self-expression through creation.

BAND

South Garland's band is divided into groups; the concert band, marching band, and stage band.  Every band member is required to participate in the concert and marching band.  The stage band consists of those students who try out and are chosen by the band director.

BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA

Business Leaders of America is an organization that promotes solid business practices and is open to all students presently enrolled in a business course or those who have taken business classes in the past.  Members practice involvement in charities such as the Ronald McDonald House and Children's Hospital.  Funds are raised to benefit the business department  and to give scholarships to senior members.  

BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS OF AMERICA

Business Professionals of America is a club composed of students enrolled in Business Information Processing.  Through club meetings, field trips, and contests, students learn good business techniques and the qualities of a good leader and successful person, both professionally and socially.

CHEERLEADERS

The purpose of this organization is to foster school spirit in the student body.  There are ten varsity cheerleaders, eight junior varsity cheerleaders, and ten freshman cheerleaders.

CHOIR

Mixed - Open to grades 9, 10, 11, and 12.  Audition is not required.

A Capella - Composed of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12.  Audition is required.  Students are judged on quality of voice, sight reading, and attitude.

Showboaters - Open to grades 9, 10, 11, and 12.  Audition is required and approximately 15 voices are selected.   This group sings primarily popular music for the purpose of singing for clubs, banquets, and other civic organizations.

COLONEL-SENTRIES

The purpose of this organization is to aid in fostering school spirit in the student body.  Necessary qualities of the membership include leadership, character, ability to work well with others, and a willingness to do volunteer services for the school.  The total membership will number eight students which are  selected from the junior and senior class.  The Colonel is selected from the senior applicants.

DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION CLUBS OF AMERICA

DECA contributes to the personal and professional development of its members through a program of activities including leadership training,  career study, and other functions.  To be a member the student must be a junior or senior and 16 years of age and have average or above-average grades.  Members compete in area and state contests with entries in such categories as job interview, sales demonstration, and public speaking.

DIXIE DARLINGS

The purpose of the junior varsity drill team is to promote school spirit by performing in the stands and on the field by junior varsity games and by serving as a cheering section at varsity games.  Membership is open to freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior students.

ECOLOGY CLUB

The purpose of the club is to help students become more aware of the environment around them.  Members become involved in cleanup projects and usually take at least one field trip.

FRENCH CLUB

This organization gives students the opportunity to learn more about the language and culture of France. 

FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA

The FFA is designed to build a background for students who desire a college degree in agriculture or wish to enter farming and ranching.  They enter district, area, state, and national stock shows, judging, competitions, and leadership contests.

FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA

Through FHA students develop initiative, poise, social abilities, a sense of responsibility, and leadership.  Its purpose is to teach the students to live better today in order that the world will be a better place in which we live tomorrow.  Any student who has had or is taking one year of homemaking may join.

GERMAN CLUB

This active organization gives students a chance to learn about different cultures through diverse activities.

HEALTH OCCUPATIONS STUDENTS OF AMERICA

HOSA is a club composed of students enrolled in Health Occupations Cooperative Education and Health Care Sciences.  Through club activities, field trips, leadership conferences, and skill contests, students broaden their knowledge of the health field and professional skills in work-related situations.

HOME ECONOMICS RELATED OCCUPATIONS

HERO is an organization for students in Home Economics/Cooperative Education.  Active participation will enrich the student's understanding of social, civil, and personal responsibilities.

INDUSTRIAL ARTS CLUB

This is an organization of students who are currently enrolled in Industrial Arts classes or who have had at least one Industrial Arts class (wood, drafting, power mechanics) while attending South Garland High School.  The club is a state and national charter member of the Industrial Arts Students Association and participates actively in both.

INTERNATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY

The International Thespian Society is an honorary organization open only to theatre students.  In order to apply for membership, students must maintain a B average in their theatre courses and accumulate 100 hours in the field of theatre arts.  Its purpose is to further interest in theatre activities.  Activities include taking a part in theatrical productions, field trips, and UIL One-Act  Play Competition.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE

The jazz ensemble is open to grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, and approximately 25 students are chosen by audition only.  Primary functions are to perform for school functions or local civic functions and to compete in area jazz competitions.

LATIN CLUB

The Latin Club is an organization made up of students who have studied the Latin language.

Latin Honor Society

The Latin Honor Society is a select organization of students who have taken three semesters of Latin and maintained an A average.

LIGHT BRIGADE

Light Brigade is an organization designed to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.  Members present programs to peers and elementary students. 

MU ALPHA THETA

To be eligible, a student must have completed five semesters  of college preparatory mathematics including Algebra II, provided the student has maintained a 3.33 grade average in his/her math work and a 2.66 grade-point average in general high school work.  Club activities include monthly programs to promote scholarship in and understanding of mathematics.

NATIONAL BETA CLUB

The National Beta Club is a national honorary service-leadership organization.  Its purpose is to promote activities which will benefit the school and community.  Membership is attained during the spring of a student's sophomore or junior year. Members must have and maintain an overall 2.33 grade-point average.  

NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE

Any student enrolled in a speech/debate class who has earned a total of 25 N.F.L. points is eligible to join the National Forensic League.  The goal of the National Forensic League is to promote understanding though communication and to enhance debate and dramatic skills.

NATIONAL FRENCH HONOR SOCIETY

The aim of  this organization is to stimulate interest in the study of French, to promote higher standards of scholarship, to reward high scholastic attainments, to create enthusiasm for an understanding  of another culture and civilization, and to promote and perpetuate international friendship.  Members must have and maintain an A average in French, a B average in other solid subjects, and must have taken at least three semesters of French.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

The National Honor Society is a national honorary organization designed to promote high standards of scholastic achievement.  Membership in this organization is one of the highest honors that can be attained by a student.  Membership is obtained during the second semester of the junior or senior year.  Students are selected on the basis of scholarship (3.33 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale), leadership, character, and service.  

NATIONAL SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY

This national organization is composed of students who have demonstrated a particular talent in the study of Spanish.  To be eligible, a student must have completed at least three semesters of study, maintaining a 92-or-above average in Spanish, and an overall grade-point average of  3.16 or above.  The purpose of the society is to recognize high achievement in Spanish by students of secondary schools and to promote a continuity of interest in the Hispanic studies.

PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL

The purpose of the President's Council is to coordinate the activities of all clubs and organizations at South Garland High School.  The president of the Student Council presides at all meetings and the corresponding secretary of the Student Council acts as secretary for the President's Council.  Membership is made up of club presidents or their designee and their sponsors.

QUILL AND SCROLL

Quill and Scroll was organized to promote an interest in all phases of journalism.  Members must have at least an overall 84-86 average and have done outstanding work in some phase of journalism.                     

SCIENCE CLUB

The Science Club is open to any student who has successfully completed one year of science.  The club's primary purpose is to further the knowledge of science, to increase the interest of students in the science field, and to explore individual interests and abilities in relation to the various fields of science.

SOUTHERN BELLES

The varsity drill team's  main purpose is to promote school spirit by performing in the stands and on the field at all varsity games.  Members shall be drawn from sophomore, junior, and senior students.  Strutters is a group organized within the Southern Belles.  Tryouts are held for members of any classification.  

SOUTH S.I.D.E

South Student Involvement and Diversity Enrichment (South SIDE) is an organization created to develop better school spirit  and to increase student involvement at SGHS. We strive to build a better school image thru mutual respect and diversity among students, staff and our community.

SPANISH CLUB

This club, composed of students who are currently in Spanish classes, has as its purpose developing cultural awareness and appreciation, and promoting interaction within the Spanish-English community.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The purpose of the South Garland High School Student Council is to serve as a liaison between students and administration and to provide meaningful contributions toward the overall enhancements of school life.  

 TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF FUTURE EDUCATORS

Membership in this organization is open to any student who is interested in exploring teaching as a career and who has the high qualities of character, personality, scholarship, and leadership essential to a good teacher.

VOCATIONAL INDUSTRIAL CLUBS OF AMERICA

Membership in VICA is available to any student enrolled in Cosmetology, Industrial Electronics, and Industrial Cooperative Training.  Members may compete in contests for district and state in such categories as projects, speaking, and speed skills.  It helps students to prepare for leadership in the world of work.
