History
Brandenburg Middle School opened its doors in 1972 to serve the middle school aged children of South Garland. Mr. Byron Willis was assigned to be the school's first principal after serving as the Assistant Principal at Austin Middle School. Mr. Willis hired Mike Moses to be his assistant principal. Brandenburg Middle School thrived under Mr. Willis and each successive principal as evidenced by the numerous awards and recognition achieved by individual students and the school as a whole.
In 2001, the school became the Classical Magnet offering courses in Latin, gymnastics and dance. Classical students receive the benefits of a full and well-rounded curriculum with a focus on Classical studies. The campus boasts the district's only gymnastics facility. The campus has achieved the Texas Education Agency's "Recognized" status as well as the "Exemplary" status for its academic achievement and has earned TEA's Gold Performance recognition for student attendance.
With its strong commitment to the arts, many future stars will pass through the halls of Brandenburg. LeAnn Rimes, the Grammy Award winning country artist, attended Brandenburg as a sixth grader before making it big. Dr. Mike Moses, the second principal to serve at Brandenburg, was appointed twice by then Governor George W. Bush to serve as Texas Commissioner of Education. Dr. Curtis Culwell served as an administrator at Brandenburg and eventually became the Superintendent of the Garland Independent School District.
While not all students will become award winning artists by attending Classical Center at Brandenburg, they will receive an award winning education that puts them in the position to be anything they wish to be.
