Dear Cooper Cougar Community, 

I am honored to serve the amazing students, parents, staff, and community members of Cooper Elementary in my 8th year!  This will be my 28th year in education and 10th year in Garland ISD.  Throughout my educational journey, I have worked as a math/science teacher in various grade levels for 12 years.  In addition, I have worked as an instructional coach for three years and administration for the last 13 years.   

I am committed to ensuring that we create a student-centered community where every child receives differentiated learning that inspires and challenges them.   

I received my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Secondary Education from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, AR.  My Masters and Doctoral degree in School Administration was attained through Dallas Baptist University.   

I have an amazing husband that I have been married to for 28 years that is also in the field of education along with our son, Tanner who is a music teacher. 

I look forward to working side-by-side with our Cooper families and staff to continue the great success that we have here at Cooper that has been displayed throughout the years!  Please continue to check our website and get set-up with our campus class dojo at the beginning of year to get all updates.

Melanie Gilson

Assistant Principal

Hello! My name is Melanie Gilson, and I am the assistant principal here at Cooper Elementary. I am beyond excited to be a part of the Cooper family as we provide a safe and fun learning environment for each student. I am beginning my 27th year in education and my 24rd year in Garland ISD.  I have taught 1st, 2nd, and 5th grade. I have also worked as an Instructional Support Teacher, curriculum writer for the district, as well as an Instructional Coach for Early Literacy. I am currently serving my 4th year as the assistant principal for Cooper Elementary. I received my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Houston and my master's degree in urban educational leadership from Southern Methodist University. I am happily married to my husband of 301 years, and we have 3 amazing children that all attended GISD schools. I look forward to this new school year! I see a great future and amazing potential in each and every one of your children. Go Cougars!
