Preparing for college
Cooper is now an AVID school. (Advancement Via Individual Determination) It is Cooper's primary goal to prepare our students for college, career, or military readiness. It is important to start with a strong academic foundation in elementary school to prepare students for future success. Currently, AVID strategies are used in 33 of our elementary schools. These strategies are used in daily lessons across entire grade levels. Our goal is to give all students access to a path to success.
At Cooper we utilize strategies of AVID to help students:
stay organized with binders and agendas
learn note-taking skills
increase communication skills
learn in new, collaborative way
The AVID mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Therefore, AVID students:
will succeed in rigorous curriculum
will complete a rigorous college preparatory path
will enter mainstream activities of the school
will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society
Send the message to your children that school is important by attending school regularly. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to pass reading and math assessments than students who do not.
Your commitment to school attendance will also send a message to your child that education is a priority for your family, going to school every day is a critical part of educational success, and that it's important to take your responsibilities seriously.
Developing graduates that are prepared for success in a globally competitive workforce is the ultimate goal of the GISD Ready initiative.
