History

Old photo of the school

W. C. Daugherty Elementary, named for former school board president and land donor, was opened in January 1952. Daugherty Elementary is the second oldest Elementary school in GISD. In 1979 a new wing was opened with a new Library and new Gym. The old school contained under 400 students, and it was considered a small school in GISD. Daugherty was/is considered a Title 1 school because of its percentage of low-income students.

New Building

In the fall of 2012, this building was torn down and a state-of-the-art, two-story building began construction to house many of the neighborhood students who were bused to schools outside of their neighborhood. This new school building will allow Daugherty to grow from an 18 section (390 student) school to a 29+ section (750+) school.
