John Whitlow is beginning his 3rd year at Garland High School. He received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Henderson State University and has done graduate work at New Mexico State University as well as the University of Texas at El Paso. Mr. Whitlow began his teaching career as a high school and middle school band director and has been teaching piano since 1998 when he and his wife Brenda opened a commercial music studio in the area. In addition to music, he loves snow skiing, fly fishing, biking and off-roading in his Jeep.

This course is designed for students who are interested in learning and applying the fundamentals of music to the keyboard. Piano lab is a small piano class of 16 students who are engaged in the study of piano techniques and theory for the beginner, intermediate, or advanced student. Students are instructed in both group and individual lessons according to their own level and progress. Daily instruction and supervised practice enables the student to progress much more quickly and to maintain a high level of interest and awareness. No previous experience at the keyboard is required. Since performing is a major component of the course, several class recitals and two concert performances per year are expected of each student. UIL participation is required of any student in the Performing Arts Endorsement program at GHS, and others who are capable of mastering the listed literature are highly encouraged to participate in UIL as well. Students who take privately will find this class very beneficial as it gives them much needed practice time and full cooperation is given to the private lesson instructor.
