Students and staff focus on continuing the scope and sequence of GISD curriculum. Staff individualize teaching for many students in order to help them bring their graduation plan up to date. An instrumental part of that work is done by students using the online curriculum found on Edgenuity.com and distance learning.

Distance learning

Students assigned to the Garland Alternative Education Center (GAEC) that are taking a course not offered at GAEC can continue taking a course through distance learning. Students are able to receive the same assignments their homeschool classroom is completing through a variety of digital opportunities. Communication between the home school teacher, the GAEC home room teacher and the student is very efficient using technology like Google Docs, Edmodo, Gmail, G-Moodle, and several others. The goal of distance learning is for students to be able to continue their learning and be successful in these courses when they return to their home campus.

Edgenuity

Edgenuity is an online grade recovery program that is used in GISD/GAEC to help students stay on track with their graduation credit requirements. When students have failed a course during a grading cycle, their teacher can assign them to that course in Edgenuity. Students can then log on to the course that has been assigned to recover (pass) for the failed cycle. This program is helping students avoid having to make up courses (at a cost of $125 ) in summer school. Students enrolled in Edgenuity can work on their course from any internet connected computer. GAEC has opened its labs before and after school for our students to work on Edgenuity. The lab is open in the morning from 7:15 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. and in the afternoon from 4:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. If you have questions about this program please contact the school office.

Tutoring

Teachers at GAEC offer a minimum of 90 minutes of tutorials per week. Many teachers have a very flexible schedule that includes student access to more time than the minimum. Visit the staff information page for more information regarding the specific times and days for tutorials.
