Dr. John Poynter joined GHS during the 2015-2016 school year, after being in the GISD Student Services Department since 2007-2008. Prior to this, he spent 10 years in Mesquite ISD and 4 years in Dayton ISD. In education since 1993,  he has served in several roles. He was a History teacher at both the middle school and high school levels, a coach and an assistant principal at both levels as well.

Dr. Poynter graduated from Kent State University with his Bachelor’s degree and Texas A&M Commerce with his Masters and Doctorate. He is also currently an Adjunct Professor for Concordia University in their Educational Master’s program.

Dr. Poynter is married and his wife, Yokabel, is a high school teacher in Mesquite ISD. Dr. Poynter has three amazing children: Kenzie, Jace and Greyson. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, coaching his kids, watching sports and traveling when he can with his wife.

Dr. Poynter is extremely excited to be working with the students, parents and staff here at GHS and is looking forward to a great year.
