SAIL

Handley STEM is proud to be one of the GISD SAIL pilot campuses. What is SAIL? Sheltered Approach for Improved Literacy, or SAIL for short, is our school's program for successful reading and language development. Our campus uses fun, interactive lessons to engage our scholars to help them grow academically and fill any gaps they may have. We create schoolwide reading routines, create literacy-rich environments, foster a love of reading, and we do all this while being patient and supportive to our scholars.

STEM campus

In 2022 our campus transitioned from a traditional elementary school to a STEM campus. One of the many unique features about our school is how we incorporate STEM across the building. STEM campuses integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics throughout all curriculums and classes schoolwide. Our teachers use exciting, hands-on lessons, to challenge our scholars to develop problem solving skills that allow them to think critically and be innovative. Our goal, as a STEM campus, is to prepare our young scholars for success and help them be excited and prepared for future STEM related careers and interests.

Technology

Handley STEM is proud to be a technology rich campus. Our school has a state-of-the-art computer lab that is accessed by all grades. In addition to our school computer lab, each child is issued a portable device at school. Our kindergarten through 2nd grade students are issued individual iPads and our 3rd through 5th grade students are issued Chromebooks to use in their classrooms. Our classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards, large screen TVs, and teacher workstations that are comprised of computer laptops, webcams, and projection devices.

WIN time

Handley STEM scholars have daily WIN (What I Need) time each day. During WIN time our scholars get tailored instruction that fits their current individual needs. Scholars may participate in gifted and talented enrichment activities, they may see district specialists in other classrooms, join small groups for reading or math, they have attend remediation groups, they may attend intensive tutoring groups, etc. Our WIN time activities change on a regular basis, they match what our scholars need and when they need it!
