Our school is named after Carl Leroy Herfurth, who was born in Rowlett in 1910. Carl lived on the family homestead all his life. The Herfurth home is better identified at the yellow Victorian home located on the south side of Miller Road.
Although Carl and his wife had no children of their own, everyone, especially children, loved them. Carl devoted a lot of his time mentoring to his many nephews and nieces as well as other children in his church and community.
Carl had a high regard for education. Being that his mentoring was before computers and spell check, he would emphasize to the kids, the need to perfect one's spelling skills. He believed that spelling was a good insight into one's education and that society would treat you according to your education. Higher education and love for our country were strongly encouraged to those young men and women that Carl came in contact with.
