The Hillside string program is designed for 4th and 5th grade students desiring to play violin, viola, cello, or string bass. Students need no prior musical training to enroll in group classes varying in size from 10 to 30 students depending on scheduling. Lessons are provided weekly during the homeroom block during the regular school day. Lessons are provided weekly at the intervention block during the regular school day. HAE Advanced Strings proudly boast of receiving unanimous superior ratings at Sandy Lake Funfest Festival for the past 15 years. Currently 98 students participate in the HAE orchestra program.

Each year, parents of beginning string players are given an opportunity to come into the classroom with their child and trade places with them.  The student becomes teacher to their parent, and the students teach them how to hold the instrument properly, how to sit correctly with their instrument, how to hold the bow, and finally, learn a song.

Solo/Ensemble competition

Each year our Hillside Orchestra students perform in the Garland ISD Solo/Ensemble Festival. This year, we had 43 of our students receive ribbons for excellent and/or superior solos, duets, and trios. We are very proud of these students and all their hard work this school year.
