Sam Houston is proud to offer many award-winning fine arts programs.

Accelerated Art 1 (HS credit) & Art 1 (HS credit)

The Accelerated Art 1 program is a high school level year-long, eighth-grade art course at Sam Houston Middle School for which students earn high school credit. This class is specially designed for students who have shown an interest in art as well as have an exceptional talent in art. The Accelerated Art program helps each art student learn and build on their previous knowledge of art techniques with an integration of art history. These art techniques include, but are not limited to, drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, and ceramics. The Accelerated Art program helps students focus on a specific area of interest while building a student art portfolio and participating in competitions. This class prepares each student for IB and AP high school art. Students earn HS credit for this course.

Additionally, any 8th grader may take a regular high school level art class to receive high school credit.

A Cappella Choir

A Cappella, the advanced choir at Sam Houston Middle School, is an audition-only group. Comprised of 7th and 8th-grade students, the choir performs throughout the year in both concerts and competitions. Most recently, they received a rating of "Excellent" at the University Interscholastic League's Concert and Sight-Reading competition. Additionally, A Cappella collaborates with the SHMS theatre department to present musical theatre production, the first of which was Aladdin in January of 2015.

Advanced Theatre

Our Award Winning Theatre Program at Sam Houston is a fantastic way to make friends and perform. Advanced Theatre performs four shows a year, including a children's play to be performed for elementary students and 8th Grade Student Directs. Every other year Advanced Theatre joins together with choir and put on a musical. In November the students go to a competition at Garland High School and compete against other middle schools in the district. The theatre is proud of all of its accomplishments and looks forward to what the future will bring!

Honors Band

As one of Sam Houston's most visible and consistently successful organizations, the SHMS "Mighty Colt" Honors band performs at numerous school events, concerts and interscholastic competition.  The band hall houses over 100 trophies attesting to the students' past musical accomplishments. Members represent Sam Houston at GISD All-District Band, GISD Solo & Ensemble Competition and UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest.  Most recently, the band earned a 1st Division Superior rating at UIL Contest. Individual students earned over 70 First Division medals at the solo competition last February.
