Keeley Elementary general information, policies, and procedures

School visitation

Due to COVID and for the safety of our students and staff, building access for parents, guardians and other adults will be by appointment only. If you need to drop off items or leave messages for your child, our wonderful office staff will assist you. Individually wrapped, store bought items can be brought for student birthdays.  No balloons, drinks, or party favors may be brought.

PLEASE NOTE: Parental lunch visits and food drop off will NOT be permitted at this time.

Student medication

All medication to be administered during school hours must be delivered to the Keeley Clinic with a signed parent permission form. The parent permission form is located on the GISD website and also at the Keeley clinic. Please meet with the School Nurse to discuss your child's specific needs or email Nurse Reilly at jreilly@garlandisd.net.

Dress code

All students are encouraged to develop and maintain good dress habits at school and school-sponsored activities.  Extremes in mode of dress are not acceptable; e.g. exposed midriffs, see-through clothing, tank tops, or garments advertising products that are in poor taste. Shorts of a modest length and fit  (approximately knee-length, loose fitting and hemmed) may be worn by students in all grade levels.  The final decision for determining appropriate dress and appearance will rest with the teacher and administration.

Phone calls to the office

The office staff cannot be responsible for changes in transportation that are given after 2:30 p.m.  Please send a note to the teacher and call the office if a change in routine transportation is necessary.  When calling for a change in transportation, your child’s ID# must be given.

Procedures for releasing students before 3:30 p.m.

All students must be checked-out of school by front office personnel.  Before releasing a student to an adult, a sign-out form must be completed, and a picture ID shown.  Our first priority is our students safety; therefore, parents may not enter classrooms at the end of the day to pickup students or wait in the classroom hallways.  Due to traffic congestion at dismissal time any student that must leave before 3:30 p.m. should be picked up by 3:05 p.m.

Bus/car procedure

There are many students walking to and from school.  For this reason, it is imperative that the bus lanes remain free from cars.  We further need your assistance in not parking your car and leaving it in the driveway at the front of the school.  If you need to come inside, please park in the visitor’s space or across Liberty Grove Road at Lake Cities Community church.  The back parking lot is tor Keeley faculty and bus traffic only. Parents cannot drop off or pick up students at the back of the school where the dumpsters are located (teachers parking lot).

Early arrival

All students who arrive at school before 8:00 a.m. are to report to the cafeteria (kindergarten and 1st grade), or the gym (grades 2-5).  If your child eats breakfast at school, he/she should report to the cafeteria immediately upon arrival regardless of grade level.  We do not allow outside food to be brought in for breakfast.  Our goal is to have all students fed and in class by 8:10 a.m.  All students are encouraged to bring a book to read while waiting in the gym or cafeteria.

Meal tickets/lunch money

Students may put money in their lunch account each morning in the cafeteria before school starts.  This school year there is no cost for a hot plate lunch or breakfast.  Extra money put on a students account will be for extras like ice cream or chips.  For students who bring their lunches, drinks may be purchased in the cafeteria.  Please make any checks written for lunch payable to Keeley Elementary.  Applications for free/reduced lunch will be sent through Skyward to each student. Please complete this form.

Absences and tardies

Students need to bring a signed note from their parents when they return to school after an absence.  The absence note must be received within 3 days of the absence.  Parents are encouraged to call the school or e-mail the teacher to report an absence.  Keeley will notify you by phone when your child has an absence.

School hours

All classes start at 8:10 a.m.  There will be a staggered dismissal schedule beginning at 3:15 p.m., and ending at 3:30 p.m.  All outside doors are locked at 8:10 a.m.  After 8:10 a.m., all individuals must ring the bell to enter the school.  The bell is located on the door closest to the visitor’s parking lot.

Cell phones and technology devices

Personal cell phones and other technology devices used inside the building during the school day are prohibited, unless approved by the classroom teacher for instructional use.  Any device taken away from students can only be retrieved by a parent.

With your support on the above matters, I am confident that your child and the Keeley staff will have a successful and productive year.  Again, I am glad your child will be with us this year and I look forward to another amazing year with our KEELEY FAMILY!

Sincerely,
Ms. Sheri Taylor
