What do we do in the library?
Students have enjoyed coming to the library each week. All students have learned how to check-out their own books using the computer system. Second through fifth graders have practiced using a catalog computer to find what they're looking for.
Here are some topics that we've covered so far this year:
- Dewey Decimal System
- How the library is organized
- Book care
- Exploring different genres, authors, and types of books
- Beanstack and logging our reading
- Online resources like PebbleGo and NatGeo Kids
- Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, and other culturally diverse celebrations
- CyberSafety and digital citizenship
- Supporting classroom learning and TEKS
- Volcanoes, plants, animals, the history of different holidays, exploring random topics that show up in our read alouds (like how to solve a rubik’s cube, lefthandedness facts, or the REAL Winnie-the-Pooh) and so much more!
Library policies and procedures
P.R.I.D.E. in the Library
Students will follow our campus-wide behavior expectation system in the library. Here is what those expectations look like:
Purpose - Enjoy reading, sharing, and discussing books and authors. Gain information literacy and tech literacy skills.
Responsibility - Take care of books and library materials. Return books for others to enjoy.
Integrity - Be honest about late or lost books. Help others in the library classroom.
Determination - Put effort into all library activities.
Excellence - Be a good listener and participate in library lessons.
Lost and Late Books
If your student has lost one or more library books, please email Mrs. Entrop to let her know. The books can be marked as lost and your student can continue to check out books on their library day. You may also send a handwritten note with your student's name and the title of the book.
Periodically, Mrs. Entrop will send home late notices if books haven't been turned in for weeks past their due date. These notices will list the cost to replace the book, if you'd like to pay for a replacement. Please don't replace books on your own. Books have to be purchased from certain retailers and be in specific formats that have been previously approved.
We will never charge fines for late books. However, damaged and lost books will list a fine on your student's account.
Beanstack tracking
Beanstack is the district-wide reading trackers that students use to input their reading minutes.
Every month the top school and grade-level readers are announced. While there are no requirements for students to track their reading, it provides motivation, engagement, and accountability.
Students can log their minutes quickly through the ReadyHub or the Beanstack app. Parents are encouraged to help their students log their daily reading in Beanstack each night at home.

Parent Library Portal

Library materials under consideration
The Garland Library Services department follows state law and is committed to maintaining an open and transparent ordering process for library materials. See the link below to review library materials that are currently under consideration for purchase. The lists will be available for public review for at least 30 days before final board approval.

Online Instructional Resources are available to all students, teachers, parents, and administrators from any district or non-district computer.
