Poet Tree

Our wonderful Librarian Kathryn Holmes along with aide Kristen Hasse has several fun activities in store for National Poetry Month.

In April, we will have a "Poet Tree" outside the library with poems by famous poets and poems by our amazing Lister poets. Students will be able to submit poems to be printed on leaves through the Lister Library Canvas page.

April 29th is Poem in Your Pocket Day. Each class will receive a pocket of poems for your students. Students are welcome to keep their poems in their pockets!

This month we will have a Poetry Walk outdoors! Several days (depending on weather) poems will be posted on signs outside. Classes are invited to take a walk and enjoy the poems. Students can be encouraged to observe and collect sensory images from nature. The library will have a cute nature/poetry sheet where they can write down words from the things they see, hear, smell, and touch. Then they can use those words to create their own poems if they wish. Dates and details to come!

Susan Stevens Crummel

Lister was fortunate to have a visiting author come to our school. Students had the opportunity to observe and learn from Susan Stevens Crummel as she explained authoring a book, illustrating a book, and how she imagines and creates her ideas. An entertaining reading session followed, with a lot of fun student participation.

We honor Dr. Seuss' Birthday with a week long celebration of Read Across America.

Many fun activities are planned throughout the week including:

• Green Eggs and Ham breakfast
• Guest Readers
• Dr. Seuss hats for sale
• Dr. Seuss photo booth
• celebratory dress up days

Our library offers two book fairs throughout the year.  One in the Fall and one in the Spring.

Students are allowed to make a "wish list" to take home, or they may bring a parent/guardian to the late night book fair that is offered once during the week of the book fair.

In an effort to help students from falling behind in important academic skills, Garland ISD and Scholastic Books have paired together to give all current Kindergarten and 1st-grade students at Lister a packet of books and reading activities to enjoy over the summer.

Upon returning to school in August, the child will hand in their Reading Log and Book Reports provided in the packet to their new grade level teacher.  Prizes and rewards for participation are awarded the first week of September.
