On November 12, 2022 Lyes Lumberjacks defeated the other 11 Garland Middle schools to win the first GISD Middle School UIL One Act Play Competition. I have been here 18 years says Mrs. Carter Lyles Director. Garland has always had a Middle School Theatre Festival. In this festival we practiced UIL rules but were not deemed official UIL. Our goal was to get a 1 rating and get a trophy. We were just competing against ourselves. This year Dr. Fiorelli, the director of Fine Arts, announced that Middle School would transition to UIL. This meant using the approved script list or submitting a script for approval. It also meant that the middle schools were actually competing against each other. The Lumberjacks performed a play entitled “All Chimed In” by James Gustafson
This play was not on the approved list. After waiting for weeks the play was finally approved and the Lumberjacks worked hard on the play they had chosen. Lyles advanced in Zone 2 on Friday and came back Saturday to win District. The UIL District Judge complimented the Lumberjacks on delivering vivid characters, being engaged at all times and being such a strong ensemble cast. Ms. Carter said, “ I hope my students always remember what it felt like when they called our name. I know I will.”
