Non-traditional High School
The non-traditional high school program offers two computer-based educational sessions for 9-12th grade to meet the needs of diverse students. With morning and afternoon sessions, we hope to accommodate numerous student schedules.
Fostering community in high school
Visit Mrs. Hutchinson's high school class to see fostering community in action. Every student in Hutchinson's class has a name tent. On this tent, students write information like their name, favorite snack, hobbies and interests. This allows students and the teacher to make connections, and when new students enter the class, the name tents help them to get to know other students. They quickly feel like part of the community.
Another strategy used in Hutchinson's class is the Avid clap. Hutchinson realizes how important it is for students to feel celebrated when they reach their goals. In this class, when a student meets an academic goal, everyone participates in giving them a celebratory Avid clap. When asked how she feels about receiving the Avid clap, Ashley Clark, "All eyes are on you in a good way because you have accomplished something good." This is the exact feeling that Hutchinson and all teachers at MPA want to create.
