Volunteer

Using art to help

Volunteering is a valuable activity that benefits everyone involved. Students can volunteer both within and outside of school, showcasing their talents, gaining valuable skills, and experiencing the pride that comes from helping others. Ms. Torres organized a community service project with her class to assist Ms. Black. For this project, students decorated lunch bags with drawings and kind messages. These bags will be donated to kitchens and shelters that provide food for unhoused individuals in our communities. Students don't always need to leave school to participate in community service. By providing these opportunities, we can help them exceed our expectations. Together, we can all contribute to making the world a better place through acts of kindness.

Student volunteers helping pets

MPA students recently finished a community service project called Tennis Ball Rope Toys for Dogs. The project began during Kindness Week and was designed to be one that any student could participate in. We have a large number of Newcomer students, and we wanted to do something that allowed them to practice speaking and understanding English. Working together in small settings allowed us to meet this goal. Additionally, we wanted students to be able to create a product that would fill a need - a need that they could immediately see and understand. We wanted that need to be related to kindness. What started as a project with a small group of students eventually spread to others. Students volunteered to take materials home and work on the toys. We had so much help with this project that we finished ahead of schedule, and we are looking forward to donating the toys to local dog shelters.
