AVID
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a national program which identifies students who fall in the middle academically, and prepares them for college.
AVID has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students and in closing the achievement gap.
The AVID elective class supports students with their rigorous course work through organizational and study skills, critical thinking and enrichment activities. A team of teachers, administrators and college tutors work together to encourage each student to attend a four-year university.
In the 2014-2015 school year, North Garland High School was proud to become Garland ISD's first AVID National Demonstration School. According to AVID, "Demonstration Schools undergo a rigorous validation process and are required to be revalidated every few years to ensure high levels of implementation, with quality and fidelity to AVID strategies schoolwide."

AVID at a glance
- AVID is an in-school academic support program which spans elementary through high school
- AVID serves all students but focuses on the least served students in the middle
- AVID began with one high school and now impacts more than 700,000 students in more than 4,900 schools and 28 postsecondary institutions in 46 states, the District of Columbia and 16 other countries.
- NGHS has earned the designation of AVID National Demonstration School, and is recognized by AVID as an exemplary model of the AVID College Readiness System
