Music
Mrs. Foster grew up in Austin, Texas and received her Bachelors of Music in Music Education from Lamar University. From Lamar, she moved to the Dallas area and has taught elementary music and middle school band since 2011. She resides in Garland with her family and loves music (especially playing her ukulele,) exploring cool places in DFW, learning, and a good latte. Thanks to grants, Mrs. Foster has been able to build a music classroom full of instruments, movement props, technology, and musical tools. She hopes to build this collection even more in the coming years.
Music Classes
All students in kindergarten through fifth grade attend General Music class at least once a week. Mrs. Foster teaches musical concepts through singing, playing instruments, speech, movement, and exploration. Students will learn how to read and perform music and connect music to other subjects and experiences.
Special Events
Students have the opportunity to perform what they have learned in special PTA Performances at the monthly PTA meetings. Stay tuned here for the dates and groups performing at each meeting!
All fourth graders attend the Symphony Concert free of charge thanks to the Garland ISD Visual and Performing Arts department, This concert, performed by the Garland Symphony Orchestra, gives the students the opportunity to reinforce classroom learning as well as practice audience etiquette. During this unit of study students learn more about the families of instruments, traditional and modern orchestral music, and the characteristic sounds of instruments and instrumental ensembles. The students get to see their learning live and in action at this concert.
Co-Curricular Music Groups
Honor Choir
Choir is a performing group made up of fourth and fifth grade students. We practice on Mondays during Specials time and perform at the school and in the community throughout the year. Choir focuses on formal singing and Orff Ensemble pieces of music.
Ukulele Club
Ukulele Club meets after school once a week to practice. This club is possible through generous donations from DonorsChoose.org and the Garland Education Foundation, and primarily focuses on the performance of ukulele. Students in Ukulele Club learn both traditional and modern songs, as well as the fundamental techniques of reading and performing ukulele music.
