AVID at O'Banion: Keeping Scholars College Ready for Over a Decade
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The goal of AVID is to prepare students for college and success in a global society. We use AVID to bring out the best in students and close the achievement gap. For more information about the program visit www.avid.org.
O'Banion offers the AVID program to qualifying 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. This year, we have a grand total of 11 AVID classes offered at O'Banion, 5 of those being AVID Excel classes.
At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, O’Banion was validated as an AVID National Demonstration School for a term of three years. This is a huge honor and tells the world that O’Banion Middle School has a college-going culture and that all students (not just AVID students) receive some of the best instruction in our area. This prestigious title is something only 2% of all campus across the nation receive and we are one of the lucky few schools to have received it!
Being an AVID National Demonstration School has brought to O’Banion many opportunities to connect with other educators. Faculty members at our campus have attended AVID Summer Institutes and other AVID training sessions, and have put these fresh ideas to work with our students. Our campus shines and we are beyond proud. Educators not only from GISD, but from the DFW Metroplex, the state of Texas, and other states across the United States, have visited our campus to see how our great AVID National Demonstration Campus operates.
