North Garland Crest
North Garland High School was first opened to students in the 1971-1972 school year, and at that time became the 3rd high school to serve the city and school district. The first graduating class was the Class of 1973. Early in its history, on August 11, 1974, a North Garland gymnast won the city of Garland's first national high school title.
Among the varied academic programs and extra-curricular activities undertaken by North Garland students, NGHS also is the home of the Math, Science & Technology magnet program for Garland ISD. The MST Program, established in 1998, offers North Garland students specialized concentrations in engineering, computer science, multimedia applications, environmental science, telecommunications, and medical studies.
Reportedly, North Garland's colors of red and black were decided by taking one color from each of the two high schools that already were serving Garland when North Garland was built.
When the school first opened in 1971, the principal allowed the students to vote on what type of Raider Sam they wanted. Among the choices were a French Raider Sam and a Western Raider Sam. The drill teams at the time guessed in advance of the student vote that everyone would choose the French Raider Sam and went ahead and set their names as the Mam'selles and La'Petites to match the French Raider Sam they expected. However when the vote results became known, the students chose the Western Raider Sam we have now, and that's why the drill team names correlate inexactly with our mascot.
Of spirit and friendship
Of wisdom and truth
These things you have taught us
In the days of our youth
The Red and the Black will
Display hearts swelled with pride
For our Alma Mater
(GO) North Garland High
Hail, Raiders, fight to the fore
Bring your honors home by the score
We'll all support
The Red and the Black to the end
We will win this game tonight
Stand up, show might
Our team, North Garland High
Hail, North Garland you are the best
With your spirit out shine the rest
We know all
Foes will tremble when you appear
We're behind you with our cheers
Victory is near
Go, Raiders we are here!
School Spirit Conduct
- Be courteous to one and all - students and teachers alike.
- Do not downgrade your school, the students or its traditions.
- Do not display unbecoming conduct or use profane language at any time, especially when we have visitors attending our pep rallies or athletic contests.
- Always support your team whether it wins or loses.
- Above all, have a deep respect for the pride in all that North Garland stands for. Our school can only be as good as we, the students, make it.
