We implement 1-Way and 2-Way Dual Language programs in Garland ISD as the state approved bilingual program model. The primary body of research on which our current DLI program is designed was conducted by Gomez and Gomez. The goal of bilingual education is to develop bilingualism/biliteracy, high academic achievement, and sociocultural competency.
The One-Way Dual Language Program serves students identified as Emergent Bilinguals with a native language of Spanish or Vietnamese. Students are served in both English and Spanish or English and Vietnamese. Instruction in this program is delivered by a teacher appropriately certified in bilingual education Spanish or Vietnamese. The goal of one-way dual language is for students to attain full proficiency in Spanish or Vietnamese as well as English through literacy and content area instruction from Pre-K to at least 5th Grade.
