National PTA
The National PTA is the oldest and largest volunteer organization in the United States working exclusively on behalf of children and youth. There are nearly 6.5 million members working in 26,000 local units through schools and communities in all 50 states. It was founded on February 17, 1897 as the National Congress of Mothers. It has grown to be an effective advocacy organization promoting the education, health and safety of children and families.
National PTA stated objectives
- Promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, and place of worship
- Raise the standards of home life
- Secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth
- Bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth
- Develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education
