Kindergarten-first grade is working on a lion lines project, and just completed a project learning what line is and the different types of lines.

Second-third grade is working on space and pattern and are completing a character zentangle project. Zentangles are structured drawings that use patterns to create abstract art. Students learned that patterns are made using repeated lines, shapes, and even colors. We also talked about space and the use of positive and negative space in artwork and why it is so important in the making of a composition.

Students started by picking one of their favorite cartoon characters and drawing them using colored pencils, they then broke their papers up into sections and drew patterns in each to create their zentangles. They started with pencil to make sure they could fix any mistakes, and then traced their patterns with marker.

Fourth and fifth graders are working on proportions of the face. They took a quiz and are now starting their self portraits.

Shugart Elementary also has work being put up at town hall on September 30th for a district meeting. Ten students from Shugart will have their work put into the show!

Art all around us

Art is all around us - incorporated in things we see and do every day. Our students are being challenged to find how art is used outside of school. Students do not have to go to art shows or museums to see great examples. Students can see art everywhere like in grocery stores, at movies theaters, and even at restaurants. We want students to be aware of these examples and to keep track of them. From the designs on their clothes to the billboards they see, art is everywhere. Also, we encourage them to be creators of the art.

Students, families, and staff are greeted with Shugart's banner with the school theme, "One team, one dream" and decorations.

At Shugart Elementary, every student in Kindergarten through 5th grade has the opportunity to explore the joy of music. Our music classes focus on building skills in singing, rhythm, movement, instruments, creativity, and music appreciation. Students learn to work together, express themselves, and make connections between music and the world around them.

Our Elementary Choir is open to students in grades third through fifth. The choir performs throughout the school year both on campus and in the community. Performances include:

School and district events
A collaborative concert with the Lakeview Centennial High School Choir
The Hawaiian Waters Music Competition each May

Through choir, students build strong vocal technique, teamwork, and pride in representing our school.
