Arts

All about specials

In addition to the regular, academic classes, Shugart students attend other specialty classes. Those classes include art, music, computer, library  and physical education. Our dedicated team of specials' teachers work hard to make sure the students reach their physical fitness and creative goals. The specials teachers include the following: Monica Black, Ilsen Carillo, Sherry Knickerbocker, Alice Uloth, Victoria Lawson, and Alexander Opland. They keep busy by supporting class room teachers. Students who attend Shugart may also consider becoming part of our after school art and music clubs.

Physical education

One of the best things we can do to protect the health of our students involves physical activity. Recess is important. Not only do students get to revitalize by moving around, they also get to get fresh air and have a little fun, too. They take all of the skills they learn in PE and put them to good use.

Art all around us

Art is all around us - incorporated in things we see and do every day. Our students are being challenged to find how art is used outside of school. Students do not have to go to art shows or museums to see great examples. Students can see art everywhere like in grocery stores, at movies theaters, and even at restaurants. We want students to be aware of these examples and to keep track of them. From the designs on their clothes to the billboards they see, art is everywhere.

Project Power

Project power kicks

The Shugart students are currently engaged in Project Power. Project Power is sponsored by the American Diabetes Association. Students are learning to balance exercise and nutrition with the objective of meeting healthy fitness goals. Coach Knickerbocker wants to be sure that our students know the components necessary for maintaining healthy lifestyles. Students are learning to play fun games and to monitor their own heart rates. Project Power has pretest and post test components. When the lessons are completed, all of our students will receive backpacks, and Shugart will receive $1500 to be used for gym activities.
