The Campus Parent Involvement Policy explains how our campus supports the important role of parents in the education of their children. We offer a Parent Compact to establish a partnership among parents, school staff, and students for improving student academic achievement.

Parent Involvement Policy

Southgate STEM Elementary School recognizes that the education of a child is a responsibility shared between the school and family during the entire time spent in school. The goal of the school district is that all students succeed academically.  In order to support this goal, the school and parents must work together.

Parents will be continuously involved in planning, studying, improving parent involvement policy, and the development of the Title I school program in an organized manner through:

  •   Campus Improvement Team (CIT)
  •   Surveys
  •   Before PTA meetings
  •   Parent Conferences    

Parents will receive information in an understandable and uniform format, including alternative formats upon the request of parents with disabilities, and to the extent practicable, in a language understood by parents. Parents will receive information as follows:

  •   Calls (School Messenger)
  •   Marquee
  •   Parent SMORE
  •   Southgate web-page 
  •   School Meetings

Parents will receive information about the Title I program in a timely manner. This information includes a description and explanation of the school curriculum, academic assessments used to measure children's progress, and proficiency levels students are expected to meet. Parents will receive information as follows:

  •   Title I Annual Meeting
  •   Parent Teacher Conference
  •   Title I meetings and family gatherings during the year
  •   Review of the class
  •   Grade Level Meetings
  •   Meet the Teacher Night
  •   Progress Reports
  •   Report Cards
  •   Skyward
  •   Parents of 3rd through 5th grade students will receive a report card of state tests in Reading, Math, Science, and Language Arts.

On request of parents, opportunities for parent meetings where they can make recommendations and participate will be provided, as appropriate, in decisions about the education of their children. The school will respond to any recommendations of this kind as soon as reasonably possible. Opportunities for meetings will be awarded:

  •   Meetings with the child's teacher (may also include the representative of parent involvement school, principal, or others when appropriate).
  •   Meetings with the Student Support Team
  •   Meetings with the counselor and administrators

Southgate Elementary School will share feedback (surveys) with the school district regarding Title I satisfaction/dissatisfaction. Southgate parents are also encouraged to send any written comments to their child’s teacher.


To build and maintain collaboration between the school, parents, and community while improving the academic performance of all students, Southgate Elementary School will help parents understand the district standards, state academic assessments, and how to monitor the academic progress of their child through:

  •   Parent Teacher Meetings
  •   Title I meetings and family events during the school year
  •   Classroom Newsletters
  •   Meet the Teacher Night
  •   Progress Reports
  •   Report Cards
  •   Parents of students in 3rd through 5th grades will receive a report card of state tests in Reading, Math, Science, and Language Arts.

The materials and training to help parents work with their children will be provided as follows:

  •   Parent Teacher Conferences

Professional training for teachers, principals, and other auxiliary employees will be provided with the help of parents, in the following areas:

The value of working with parents and how parents can help their student succeed academically

  •   Communication
  •   How to work with parents as partners
  •   How to implement and coordinate parent programs
  •   How to make connections between parents and school

Southgate STEM Elementary School will work with the following family programs where appropriate:

  •   FACE department Partnership in School Program

The representative of parent involvement will ensure that information from school, parent programs, meetings, and other activities are sent in an understandable format and in a language that parents can understand.

Copies of important memos, the School Messenger, and other media will be documented by the representative of parent involvement in the school.

Reasonable support would be provided for family activities.

Home visits for disabled parents are by appointment. Parents who need a home visit can contact the parent involvement representative of the school or the child's teacher.

Community organizations and companies are invited to participate in parent involvement activities.

  • Recruit local businesses to serve on our Campus Improvement Team.
  • Partnerships with organizations and companies will be coordinated through Garland Education Foundation.

Southgate STEM Elementary School is committed to student success. We will work together with parents to ensure that the Title I program at our school is effective in the academic development of students.

 

Diverse Community, Shared Vision, Exceptional Education

Parent Responsibilities

  • Know what my child should learn and know at grade level and how I, as a parent, can help my child learn.
  • Communicate regularly with my child’s teacher in order to know how my child is doing.
  • Make sure my child attends school on time and ready to learn.
  • Inform teacher if my child is having difficulty with homework or is having difficulty in school.
  • Attend parent conferences, PTA meetings, and parent education workshops.
  • Provide necessary supplies to help my child be prepared for school and be able to complete assignments.
  • Be an active parent/guardian and volunteer in my child’s class or at my child’s school.

Student Responsibilities

  • Help create a safe environment by following school rules.
  • Follow the dress code policy.
  • Come to school prepared with supplies, books, and homework.
  • Come to school on time and ready to learn every day.
  • Attend before and after school tutoring if I have difficulty with assignments.
  • Have and show respect for my principal, teachers, school staff members, and other students.

School/Teacher Responsibilities

  • Provide a high quality curriculum and research based instructional practice to equip students to be successful both academically and for life.
  • Create a learning environment where students feel safe, respected, and nurtured in order for healthy student-to-student relationships and healthy teacher-to-student relationships exist.
  • Provide two-way communication with parent/guardian and child concerning “what” student should learn and know at grade level and “how” to engage parent’s in child’s education.
  • Communicate with parent/guardian regularly on ways to help their child learn.
  • Expect and challenge all students to learn at rigorous, high level of thinking and make connections with learning to real world applications.
  • Seek resources and assistance for a child who is struggling with learning or having difficulty in school.
