History of Stephens stars
Our school is named after Mary Katherine Stephens. Miss Stephens taught in Garland ISD for eighteen of her forty-three teaching years before retiring. After her retirement from GISD she stayed busy with organizing the Garland Retired Teachers Association, involvement in the Red Cross, many activities in the First United Methodist Church and tutoring students in Spanish.
The creed we initially adopted was, "Katherine Stephens Elementary will stand as a shining beacon to children of all races, symbolically welcoming them into the arms of a woman who gave of herself to so many people during her lifetime".
Katherine Stephens Elementary opened its doors Monday, August 15th, 1994 with a student body of 790 students with Dr. Mike Richey as the first principal. Today, we maintain an average of approximately 600 students every year. The school was designed to be an 'around the house' school with the media center and administration being towards the center.
