Literacy is important foundation at the Classical Center at Vial. Our staff strives to develop our literacy skills everyday. Students begin each morning reading as they wait for school to start after they enter the school building.
In addition, literacy is supported with several other campus and district initiatives:
- Our campus participates in the Braum's Book Buddy program.
- Students participate in our Renaissance MyOn program.
- Cybersafety week teaches students valuable information literacy skills.
Imagine Math is an adaptive software that is accessible 24/7 on and off campus. It is a problem-solving program that works on identifying individual gaps in student learning and increasing problem-solving skills and academic literacy. It is available to all students in grades 3-5. Students can access this through the GISD Ready Hub at school and at home.
All GISD students take the MAP test three times during the school year. MAP stands for Measure of Academic Progress and assists staff understand a student's projected growth as compared to their actual growth. It is administered at the beginning of the year, in the middle of the year, and at the end of the year. MAP scores are determined by the level of difficulty of questions answered correctly not the number of questions answered correctly. If you have questions about your student's past MAP results, please contact your child's teacher.
Imagine Math Facts
Looking for fun ways to ensure your child knows his/her math facts? Imagine Math Facts is a math software program that caters to elementary students. It focuses on core fact fluency and computation. Knowing these facts frees up working memory so that students can focus on learning higher order math concepts. Students can access this through the GISD Ready Hub. Garland elementary students have access to this software. Start your calculations today!
Our second, third, fourth, and fifth grade students have an opportunity to use this resource as we prepare for STAAR. Students can prepare for our end of year testing. Students can access this at home and at school.

For the best chance of making your visions of success a reality, preparing for you student's future has to start much earlier than graduation. GISD believes that "college and career readiness" begins in elementary school and encompasses a strong academic foundation. Additionally GISD has identified some key steps students should take to get ready, setting the stage for future success.

DimensionU consists of four engaging and interactive multiplayer video games that focus on core skills in math and literacy. Each game is designed with unique features that bring out distinct academic and strategic skills in students.
Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom.
Our middle and high school students collaborate with parents, teachers and school counselors to create a personalized college & career plan with Naviance.
