Fine arts

Instruction in the Arts is a major building block in our school curriculum which prepares children for a lifetime of learning and enriching their quality of life. Whether involving music, drama, or design, the arts add joy to a child’s life, stimulating creativity and enhancing learning ability.

Get to know our Fine Arts staff by selecting the Arts tab at the top of the page.

Drama

Students in grades K-5 get the opportunity to participate in drama. These students learn everything from proper auditioning to pantomime. Students receive 45 minutes of drama instruction per week. We put on mini skits and even do some commercial work. The students participate in approximately five productions a year. During the year, one major production which include 3rd through 5th graders, are performed at the Plaza Theatre in downtown Garland.

Art

The art program at the Classical Center is for all students in grades K - 5. Students learn about art methods, the elements of art, styles of art, art history and famous artists. This year we will draw portraits and still life, paint, make collages, work with clay and many other activities. We are also involved with the PTA Reflections Contest, U.I.L. Art Memory Contest, as well as other contests sponsored by GISD.

Music

The music department at the Classical Center is very active in singing, instruments, and composer studies. We have an honor choir which consists of 4th and 5th graders who audition for the choir. The choir meets two days a week before school for practice. A well-rounded student, not only in the regular classroom, but also in music, is an important part of the Classical Center at Vial Elementary.

Piano

The Classical Center at Vial offers piano classes for all general education students in kindergarten through 5th grade and dual language students in kindergarten and first grade.  We strive for all students have an opportunity for introductory piano instruction.

It is a proven fact that learning to read music as a child enhances the functioning of those parts of the brain that are used in math and science skills as well as in spatial relationships. Students who learn to read music at a young age actually score higher on their college entrance exams. And in addition to that we find it to be a lot of fun and most rewarding to our students’ sense of accomplishment.
