Dual Language Magnet

Research shows that the ideal time to learn a new language is during the primary years. The Dual language program allow students to develop proficiency in two languages by receiving 50% of their academic instruction in English and 50% in Spanish.

This 50:50 ratio split will be employed for all core content subject areas. Students learn to read, write, listen, and speak in both languages through research-based instruction and an advanced and rigorous curriculum. Students also gain a rich appreciation of other cultures.

Benefits

Children who study a second language during the primary grade levels:

  • have an improved self concept and sense of achievement in school (Caine & Caine, 1997).

Requirements

Dual Language program at Vial

Classical Center at Vial is excited to be offering a Dual Language English and Spanish program in Garland ISD; a magnet program where students learn to read, write, listen, and speak fluently in two languages!

The Dual Language program allows students to develop proficiency in two languages by receiving academic instruction in English and Spanish. Our Dual Language classes are comprised of half all-English speakers and half all-Spanish speakers. Through social and academic interaction, all students in the dual language program learn to read, write, listen and speak in both languages equally well. Students also gain a rich appreciation of other cultures. We are following the Gomez & Gomez model for instruction.

Students in the Dual Language classes receive 50% of their instruction in English and 50% of their instruction in Spanish. An enhanced and rigorous curriculum is used to ensure the students are adequately challenged for their ability level.

There are a lot of exciting things going on in the Dual Language classes; it is so much fun to watch as the students learn in both languages. There are many enthusiastic students helping others understand their home language.
